Look in future Turbo & High-Tech Performance issues for major changes in how the editorial department approaches subject matter.
The first step in this transition can be seen in this issue, though. What I am doing is taking the voice of the magazine away from the editorial staff and lending it to the owner and tuners of the vehicles we feature.
After 10 years as editor of Turbo, it's safe to say I have described a fuel system, suspension set-up or turbo system just about every way possible.
The first stage of modification to the magazine will be quoting the owners on why they did what they did, and quoting the tuners on how they did what they did. As this "Stage 1 tweak" progresses, the hard parts used on a given feature car will be listed in an expanded "Power Technik" chart. We will also be publishing only phone numbers in our source boxes. Less text will allow us to put more stories in a given issue, which is better for everyone.
Race coverage is going to evolve as well. We plan to run the same amount of pictures, but alter our approach to the text. Instead of running through every category, we will be treating the race as a whole and focus on the classes or races that stand out. Since results can be gleaned almost immediately online, we will run a chart of winners and runner-ups. The chart and photos will be the winner's reward. A good deal of our coverage will be race breakdowns where we chronicle the closest or fastest races and behind-the-scenes stuff in the pits. If things get out of hand, we will jump our articles to the web at turbomagazine.com.
One of the possible pitfalls of using quotes from tuners is their knowledge of the subject matter may be beyond some readers. Also, what about new readers? "Back 2 Basics" will be an ongoing series of short articles that focus on the function of the most popular tuning items and hard parts used to build power in today's complex performance cars.
Stage 2 is a grand scheme, something I have always wanted to do with the magazine but haven't had the manpower to pull off. Well, since I still don't have the manpower, I am going to be calling in some favors... and Robert Choo and I will probably suffer a good deal of sleep deprivation. Look for some intense antics within the first six issues of 2003.
For the last two years or so, it's pretty much been Robert Choo and myself pumping out the magazine. I have been wary of using freelancers because of the technical orientation of our stories. We're working to gain some new voices, though, and hopefully the result of all these efforts will be a magazine that delivers the goods to long-time readers and opens the door to a new generation, too. Power to the people; that's what it's all about.Evan GriffeyEditor
