The differences between these two racers are more than night and day. John Lingenfelter--famed domestic tuner drove an American pickup truck. Tetsuya Kawasaki--famed Japanese drag racer drove a Japan-only 180SX. Lingenfelter made an impressive debut with his turbo Ecotec motivated GMC running a best of 7.44 at 183 mph.

The HKS 180SX was the most impressive car at the race--even considering the 200-mph excitement in Pro V8. The Nissan improved its best effort (7.27 at 189 mph in 1998) by scorching the pavement with 7.18 and 7.19 e.t.s and a best trap speed of 193.46 mph. It was a privilege to witness this legend on wheels run and Tetsuya was the burnout king of the event.

A diaphragm in the regulator let go, allowing methanol to enter the intake via a vacuum hose and gather in the number two cylinder hydro-locking the engine and breaking rods, pistons, cams, and cylinders--a total write off. Arslanian's car suffered a line lock failure and red lit in the first round. The Toyotas will be back.

Lisa Kubo made her 2002 debut in her old hatchback. The Civic didn't cooperate during qualifying, suffering from a broken lower control arm and after repairs, limped in the field with a 10.269. Kubo was in the closest race of the event. It came in the first round when she was paired against Rafael "Racer X" Estevez and the twin-turbo DRT Civic. Racer X got the jump off the line .521 to .558. But his .037-second advantage faded and Kubo's 9.543 was a grand total of 0.052 seconds quicker that Estevez's 9.632

The long-awaited debut of Christian Rado's wild tube-frame FWD Celica ended at E-Town. The car's two on-track appearances were marred by an incorrectly wired tach signal that wouldn't let the TRD-prepped turbo four rev past 4100 rpm and a transmission gremlin that resulted in the Celica creeping with the pedal on the floor. As you can see from the photos, this car was executed with a great deal of attention to detail.

The engine is mounted "latitudinally," like Steph's Civic and Shaun Carlson's Focus and uses a Forten sand-rail style gearbox. We especially like how the turbo system's blow-off valve directs unwanted boost right back into the air box. Its outlet is aimed straight at the compressor inlet.

The "Turbo Magazine Midnight Oil Award" went to Rafeal Estevez and the Drag Race Technologies (DRT) crew. After blowing up a new sleeved engine in qualifying, they sent a technician back to the DRT shop in Woodside, N.Y. to fetch the block-guarded short block that was in the car at Gainesville. In Florida, this engine was de-tuned to 606 hp and powered the twin-turbo Civic to a 9.49 with an AEM EMS computer overseeing engine operation.

Closer examination showed a broken No. 2 piston. Working until 2 a.m., the DRT crew bolted on the turbos, intercooler, head and all the plumbing and proved again that hard wrenching can make miracles happen. The DRT Civic not only made it to the first round but also posted a 9.63 with no signs of smoke. Unfortunately the pass was a tick too slow, as Lisa Kubo lit the win lights with a 9.54. Damnit!
