California Modified Imports conducted its last import event of the '99 season on September 12th at Sacramento Raceway. The Final Showdown combined a full-tilt drag race with a car show all in one action-packed event. On the strip, the Quick VIII Eliminator class was dominated by JoJo Callos, who owned Sacramento Raceway winning all three CMI events in 1999. At the Final Showdown he posted his best e.t. to date-a 10.16 at 139.95 mph. He is primed to be inducted into the nine-second club, joining Ed Bergenholtz and Lisa Kubo. The only other Quick 8 Eliminator qualifier in the 10s was Loc Tran who blasted a 10.89 in his pristine Civic hatchback. Other Quick class competitors included Adrian Sabori (11.02 @ 123.27), Manuel Jaramillo (11.13 @ 135.17), Coleman Yee (11.37 @ 129.89), Kurt Lee (11.65 @ 120.78), Warren Marc (11.95 @ 113.19) and Joe Calderon (12.25 @ 109.70). The entire field was made up of Honda-badged cars.
The all-motor class was a bracket-style affair that was won by Matt Marchini. Group 5 Motorsports ran its mid-11-second all-motor car to prepare for the season ending races in Palmdale and at Pomona Fairplex. Also on a test-and-tune mission was Ray Lochhead and his RX-7 which was our November '99 cover car. Ray hurt his transmission before really letting the Mazda fly.
The most competitive bracket was the Rear-Wheel Drive bracket where Bob Dix and his '57 Porsche Speedster broke off a 12.44 on a 12.4 dial-in to Steve Poderzay's 13.59 on a 13.53 dial-in.
The show portion of the program provided another dimension to the event giving spectators a chance to stretch their legs and take in the sights of Northern Cali's best import customs. The Best Of Show and Best Honda Civic awards went to Rene Bulanadi of San Francisco, California.
We are looking forward to more of a good thing in the 2000 season and CMI reports that it intends to return to a two-day format in 2000. To find out about CMI's 2000 event calendar, give them a call or stay tuned to the pages of Turbo. See you at the races.
