John Shepherd won the points race with ease as Ari Yallon, who was second in points, didn't show, thereby sewing up Shepherd's victory. Shepherd's only real challenge at Palmdale was Joel Tanzman in his '82 Supra. In qualifying, the Shepherd Racing Talon was a full second ahead of Tanzman, but the Supra has been known to run in the 10s on street tires. In competition, Tanzman broke, while Shepherd advanced to the finals against James Peterson's GSX. In the end, Peterson's 12.6 wasn't even close to Shepherd's 10.50 e.t.
All Motor XVI
One of the fastest growing classes in import drag racing is the All Motor class. This time around, the class moved up to a 16-car field with the minimum cut-off checking in at 12.75. Furthermore, of the 16 cars, 12 were running in the 11-second range. The battle between Volkswagen and Honda is always tight, but Mazda is now stepping up to the same level.
Just like in the beginning of the season, the semis had a classic VW vs. Honda battle with Scott Kelley in a match against Mike Escamilla and Bizi Ezerioha paired up with Troy Smith. Scott Kelley ousted Escamilla's 12.2 with an 11.77, giving the VW the win, while Ezerioha edged out Smith's 11.80 with an 11.64.
A familiar final round found Kelley's Toyo Tires VW in a match against Ezerioha's RS Motorworks-sponsored CRX. Nearly identical reaction times of .533 and .532 ensured a close race, but Kelly edged out Ezerioha by 0.2 seconds.
