512.7 WHPSteve Wilson has taken great care of his 1994 Supra. It started as a naturally aspirated SE edition. With no boost, Steve eventually developed an inferiority complex but wanted to keep the car he had nurtured all those years.
He enlisted SP Engineering to do the swap, and the crew reports the transformation is not as easy as it seems on paper. Beyond its immaculate look inside and out, Steve's Supra embodies the potential that Toyota built into this car.
This Supra is a minimalist's dream. Stock internals, stock valvetrain and stock fuel system, right down to the 550cc injectors. The mods are simple. Steve swapped to an HKS T04-R single turbo, then added a GReddy front-mount chiller and Veilside titanium exhaust. From there, an HKS boost controller, VPC and GCC bring the power to life.
That's it...wham, bam, thank you, ma'am. On the Skunk2 SuperFlow dyno, the Supra laid down 512.7 at 6500 rpm and 422.0 lb-ft of torque at 6200 rpm. That's some righteous power for a near-stock engine.
The Supra's 2JZ-GTE is the ultimate platform for boosting. If you need proof look to the strip. In 2002, the Pro and Street Tire champions were 2JZ-powered. In Pro, three of the four cars in the famed 6-Second Club ran the 2JZ. Paul Efantis went 8.82 at 159, and the Street Tire champion, Titan Motorsports, went 9.00 at 160-plus in streetable unibody Supras. In the Outlaw Class, Venom Racing's back-halfed Supra is one of three cars in the 7-Second Club.
This dominance on the 1320 continues on the street, and to illustrate how easy it is to generate spine-tingling power from the Supra, we found three examples of Supra tuning that use different battle plans to lay down the law on the street and on the strip.
Our test subjects are a simple single turbo, more extreme twin turbo and the Venom Racing Supra. The dyno bash was held at Skunk2's new digs in Norco, Calif., on the company's Super Flow Wyn Dyn(tm) chassis dyno. James Yen's TRD-Wide Body Supra796.8 WHPJames Yen's seductive silver-hued Supra sports a TRD-wide body and embodies why the Supra works on so many levels.
First and foremost is the 2JZ-GTE, which generates an awe-inspiring 796.8 wheel horsepower. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of this engine is that it's nearly stock, with the only additions being JE forged pistons and HKS 272 bumpsticks. That's right, stock rods, stock crank, stock valves and related components; no crazy head porting, just boost and tuning.
Pressure in this case is generated by an off-the-shelf HKS GT2835 kit that includes two turbos with .87 A/R turbine sides, a meticulously crafted TIG-welded stainless-steel exhaust manifold and twin external wastegate. Also part of the mix but not part of the kit are an HKS front-mount intercooler, Type SQV blow-off valve and HKS titanium exhaust. Boost runs from the chiller to a Veilside Surgetank intake and 100mm throttlebody set-up (tested on page 82).
The fuel side is handled by twin in-tank Mazda Competition Cosmo pumps, dual -6 fuel lines and Blitz 720cc injectors. With these squirters, the 2JZ pumped out 760 whp at 2.0 bar of pressure. They were swapped for 1000cc Blitz units and the engine was tuned for the bash at the same 2.0 bar of boost.
Tuning was executed with a simple, straightforward and time-tested battery of electronics. Starting with an ECU that was ROM-tuned by Shawn Wang of SP Engineering, the infamous tag team of HKS' VPC and GCC computers were invited to the party. The tuning strategy has the ROM tune responsible for about 95 percent of the job, with the GCC providing the fine tuning.
