A Supra is a terrible thing to waste. Word-up on that one. Sound Performance's SP-02 Supra was one step away from oblivion when it limped into Sound Performance's Bloomingdale, Ill., facility. The Toyota was rattling and smoking; it was tore up from the floor up. A detailed diagnosis uncovered two dead cylinders. A total rebuild (if possible) was the only cure. The owner's bank account could not absorb such a blow so a deal was made and Sound Performance purchased the car to serve as an in-house testbed and daily transportation for Sound Performance owner, Gary Grossman.
The 2JZ's power progression started with an SP single-turbo conversion using an SP57 turbo. Then, two other turbos (SP63 and SP67) were developed on the car. In its current configuration the internally stock, salvage yard engine is running an SP71 turbo; an SP Racing 850cc fuel kit that consists of dual pumps, twin-entry fuel rail and a center position return line; a big four-inch intake pipe; and a trick SP intake with a high-volume plenum to handle big boost. The remaining components of the turbo system include a Blitz FMIC, HKS GT wastegate and an HKS blow-off valve. The 2JZ exhales through a GReddy SP exhaust system with a polished can and a buff tip.
Up top, the cylinder head received an SP Street Port in which the runners were polished and the ports gasket matched. SP put a pair of HKS 264-degree bumpsticks in charge of valvetrain events while AEM Tru Time cam gears optimize timing.
Tuned for race gas via a trusty AEM EMS, flexing a boosted SP71 and set up for the strip with a set of slicks out back, the Supra charged down the quarter mile in 9.78 with a trap speed of 142 mph. All this through an SP-built Gen II four-speed Toyota automatic transmission fitted with a stout SP Level III 3800-rpm stall lock-up converter.
Car and driver are living the good life. The Supra's development days are behind it and Gary is free to drive the wheels off the two-toned Toyota. He and his four-year-old son, Brettm can be seen spoolin' in the suburbs of Chicago every weekend.
