Eagle-EyedAble to complete the quarter-mile in the 10-second range is Jeff Kovecsi and his 1991 Eagle Talon, all-wheel drive. To drop into the 10's the Griffith, Ind., resident has the 4G63 pushing out roughly 700 horsepower. Reaching that number requires using the right parts, and Jeff has chosen wisely. The bottom end has been beefed up with Eagle rods and Ross pistons. The top end is fortified with HKS 272 cams and Crower valve springs and retainers. The head is secured with ARP bolts. A PTE 61mm/gt35 Garrett turbo and TiAL wastegate prepare just the right amount of air to pass through an Accufab 75mm throttle body and into a BJ's intake manifold. Fuel is metered by an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and 780cc injectors. An AEM EMS controls the events in the engine. For all his help with the car, Jeff would like to say thanks to Nate.
Quarter-Mile QueenStacie Willoughby has been racing at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colo., for the last four years and taken home several trophies with her Honda CRX, including a Wally. The B18B block is filled with SRP 8.5:1 forged pistons and an STR block guard. The head is filled with Crower valve springs and titanium retainers and PFI cam gears. A Turbonetics T3/T04E turbo hangs off a Jet Hot-coated equal-length manifold. A Precision Turbo intercooler chills the charge. Boost is controlled with the tandem of a Turbonetics manual boost controller and GReddy Type-S blow-off valve. Fuel flows from a Walbro 255 lph pump to an Aeromotive FPR through an STR fuel rail and finally into then out of Precision Turbo 1000cc injectors. The air/fuel mixture is sparked off with an MSD 6BTM box and MSD cap and Blaster 2 coil. Engine management comes from AEM's EMS, with 3.5 bar MAP sensor. The suspension consists of Ground Control coil-over springs over Tokico blue struts. The alignment is kept in spec with SPC front and rear camber kits. Removing flex from the chassis is a Matrix front upper strut bar and a Energy Suspension poly bushing kit. A Ray's Custom/PFI traction bar enables Stacie to put maximum power to the track. At the track her CRX wears Axis Mag Lite wheels shod with Mickey Thompson ET drag slicks, 22x8x15. Stacie's best times to date is a 12.129 at 119 mph.
Intense IntegraChristopher Stone's 1997 Acura Integra GS-R is inspired by JDM ITRs. The whole front end is JDM spec, done up in carbon fiber from the guys at Carbon Creations. The JDM theme continues on the interior with ITR front and rear seats, carpet, door panels and quarter panels. An A'PEXi turbo timer and Auto Meter boost and oil pressure gauges keep tabs on the beast under the hood.
The B18C1 engine has been basically left stock internally. Externally though upgrades are abundant. The main player is the T3/T4 turbo pushing 10 psi. An external wastegate and blow-off valve keep pressures in check. After the intercooler the charge air enters the Skunk2 ITR manifold. The fuel side is upgraded with an AEM fuel rail, RC 550cc injectors, Walbro 255 lph pump and a fuel pressure gauge. Extra touches include Samco radiator hoses and a Mugen oil cap. A Hondata ECU keeps it running in tip-top shape. All that adds up to 289 horsepower to the front wheels.
The transmission has been treated to a Clutch Masters 6-puck disc, an eight-pound Fidanza flywheel, Kaaz limited slip differential and a Type-R final drive.
Getting the stance right is a set of four-way adjustable KYB AGX struts and coil-overs done up by Dropzone. Additional chassis stiffness is provided by front and rear, upper and lower support bars. Rolling stock consists of 17-inch ADR wheels with low-profile Hankook tires.
