The AEM Plug & Play EMS unit carries all the capabilities of a stand-alone engine management system without the headaches of hard wiring a new wire loom commonly found with installing stand-alone systems. The 16/32 bit hybrid high-speed processor allows for extremely quick processing speeds allowing real-time fuel map and ignition map changes.

AEM EMS and tuningInstalling the AEM EMS was simple, just unplug the factory harness from the factory ECU and plug the harness into the AEM EMS unit. John Concialdi of AEM tickled the keys on the laptop and the GS-R pumped out 220.9 hp, an increase of 7.6 hp. More importantly, we saw improvements of 15 to 20 hp in the mid-range, where a lot of the driving is done.

With established "quick keys," the tuner is allowed to view user-defined templates of engine parameters instantly at any time. The Windows-based software allows for the values to be viewed in numbers, gauges or bar graph form. The possibilities are endless.

While at first glance gaining 7.6 peak power with no change in boost may not seem impressive it is critical to remember that peak power is not the "end all" measuring stick. Also, the Integra only made a few passes not a full tuning session. The impressiveness of the AEM EMS can be gleaned from 5,200 rpm to 7,000 rpm where upwards of 20 hp was gained. This is prime territory in the Acura's power curve; where the engine does a lot of its best work and the AEM improvements would no doubt be intensely felt on the street.

By being able to view both the numeric graph (left) and the 3D graphics (right) side by side simultaneously the tuner is able to observe tuning changes on both graphs. this allows the tuner to spot tuning "spikes" which can cause hiccups in the program. The tuner can then smooth out the spike for more precise ignition or fuel control.
